Broadcast Management Group’s system integration team recently completed the design and build out of a custom 4K flight pack, which was designed for the specific purpose of supporting our live production projects. We decided to put the new equipment to the test during a recent multi-camera production with truTV and the Impractical Jokers at San Diego Comic-Con.
Our latest 4K flight pack features the Newtek Mix Engine switcher, which can accommodate 44 video inputs with resolutions up to 4K. The switcher also features 8 M/E buses with video re-entry and 4 key layers per M/E bus, plus 4 DDRs, 1 sound media player, 10 animation buffers, 5 graphic buffers, 4 multi-view outputs, 2 independent video mix outputs, 2 streaming outputs, and supports up to 44 PTZ robotic cameras. Also integrated into the flight pack is a 40×40 12G router, 24-port network hub, audio and video I/O panels, 2 standards converters, 2 Hyperdeck recorders, and a built-in UPS. The flight pack itself comes in a custom-built case which easily rolls into venues and sets up within hours.
BMG’s new 4K flight pack was the perfect application for truTV’s live stream. Their “Impractically Speaking” Q&A featured 4 cameras, video playback, graphics, ISO and program records, and live streaming to 2 destinations. In addition to our live program, we needed to distribute a sub-switch to the in-house Jumbotron, which we were able to accommodate using one of the two independent mix outputs. Our control room environment was located just a few hundred feet from the main stage, allowing us to get our switcher and cable runs completed in just a few short hours.
