Project Overview

Broadcast Management Group was contracted by China Global Television Network (CGTN) to provide live production, production staffing, and technical management support for a live-to-tape town hall in Washington, DC – 40 Years and Beyond. The live production was shot in front of a live audience and covered China’s transformation and evolution since 1978. 40 Years and Beyond featured 1 host, 4 panelists, and live Q&A from audience members.

Leading up to the live production, Broadcast Management Group participated in regular calls with the client to review technical and editorial items related to the show. In addition, we conducted several site surveys to take measurements, review camera blocking with the show’s director, and determine the best physical location for our control room setup.

40 Years and Beyond took place at the Jack Morton Auditorium at George Washington University in Washington, DC, which proved to be a very production friendly environment. They had adequate in-house power to accommodate all our production equipment in addition to an existing lighting grid and infrastructure, which made lighting the production much easier. Behind the stage was a large projector and multiple monitors, all of which were easy to feed and allowed for a simpler set design. GWU provided all front-of-house audio for the live audience.

All production staff were booked locally in DC. Broadcast Management Group’s CEO, EVP of Production, and Production Engineer served the roles of Executive in Charge of Production, Production Manager, and Tech Manager. The BMG team oversaw all aspects of the live production – including staffing, scheduling, and engineering.

Due to budget parameters, Broadcast Management Group brought in a flight pack for the project. 40 Years and Beyond was shot with 5 cameras – 3 hard cameras, 1 handheld and 1 jib. Broadcast Management Group provide all production equipment and engineering support, including use of our own Tricaster TC1 flight pack, Behringer audio flight pack, and FreeSpeak comms system.
