CGTN brought in BMG to provide live production, production staffing, and technical management for 40 Years and Beyond, a 90-minute live-to-tape town hall filmed in front of an audience at George Washington University’s Jack Morton Auditorium.

The program examined China’s transformation since 1978 and featured one host, four panelists, and live audience Q&A.

BMG supported the production with pre-production planning, site surveys, local crew staffing, engineering, equipment management, a five-camera flight pack workflow, audio support, communications, and on-site technical execution.

The Challenge: Capturing a Live Town Hall for Broadcast

CGTN needed a polished live-to-tape production that could capture a panel conversation, audience participation, and editorial flow inside an active university auditorium.

A Conversation-Driven Format

The program was built around a host, four panelists, and audience Q&A.

BMG needed camera coverage that could move naturally between the host, panelists, audience members, and wide room shots without interrupting the pace of the discussion.

Venue-Based Production Planning

The production took place at Jack Morton Auditorium, which offered helpful in-house infrastructure, including power, lighting grid access, projection, monitors, and front-of-house audio.

BMG still needed to determine camera positions, cable paths, control room placement, equipment layout, and how best to integrate its production setup with the venue.

Efficient Technical Approach

The production required professional broadcast coverage while staying within the project’s budget parameters.

BMG chose a flight pack workflow instead of a full mobile unit, giving the show the technical support it needed with a more efficient footprint.

The Solution: A Flight Pack Production Built Around the Town Hall Format

BMG provided the planning, equipment, engineering, staffing, and technical management needed to produce the town hall from the Jack Morton Auditorium.

Pre-Production and Site Surveys

BMG participated in regular planning calls with CGTN to review technical and editorial needs for the show.

The team also conducted multiple site surveys to take measurements, review camera blocking with the director, identify cable runs, and select the best physical location for the control room setup.

Five-Camera Coverage

BMG designed a five-camera production plan for the town hall.

The setup included:

Three hard cameras
One handheld camera
One jib

This gave the production clean panel coverage, host coverage, audience Q&A shots, wide room views, and movement from the jib without overcomplicating the setup.

Flight Pack Control Room

To keep the production efficient, BMG deployed a flight pack system built around its Tricaster TC1, Behringer audio flight pack, and FreeSpeak communications system.

The flight pack supported the live-to-tape workflow while allowing BMG to manage switching, engineering, crew communication, and production coordination from inside the venue.

Local Crew and Technical Management

All production staff were booked locally in Washington, DC.

BMG leadership and technical personnel filled key roles, including Executive in Charge of Production, Production Manager, and Technical Manager. The team oversaw staffing, scheduling, equipment, engineering, and production execution.

Audio and Communications

George Washington University provided front-of-house audio for the audience.

BMG supported the broadcast production audio needs and provided the FreeSpeak communications system to keep the technical team connected during the show.

Impact

BMG delivered a polished live-to-tape town hall that supported CGTN’s editorial goals, audience format, and production requirements.
