Project Overview

Broadcast Management Group was contracted to provide live production services, technical management, and production staffing for Volkswagen’s “Rival Road” live stream event in Washington, DC. The 2-day, 11-hour webcast featured races by some of the country’s top RC car drivers on a custom-built indoor track, all of which served as a promotional event for Volkswagen.

Broadcast Management Group was contracted by iStrategyLabs, a digital marketing agency based in Washington, DC, to provide production services for the event. Leading up to the live production, Broadcast Management Group participated in regular strategy calls with the client to review the technical logistics for Volkswagen’s “Rival Road” event. We also participated in several site surveys to review camera placements and cabling plans.

The event was held at a warehouse just outside Washington, DC. While there was plenty of space inside the facility, there was little existing infrastructure, meaning power, lighting, internet, and AC all had to be brought in. The main feature of the live production was a custom-built RC car track. There was also a commentator booth with 2 on-camera talent as well as a step-and-repeat wall for interview race winners.

All production crew was booked locally in Washington, DC with the exception of our Tech Manager, who was flown in from New York. Broadcast Management Group’s EVP of Production served as a Production Manager for the event.

Broadcast Management Group provided all of the technical infrastructure and labor to bring Volkswagen’s “Rival Road” project to life. Our live production team built-out a temporary control room to accommodate the 10-camera production and provided all audio and comms for talent and production personnel.  ISL provided all of the graphics and pre-produced video content which were rolled into the live show. Without the benefit of a true instant replay system, Broadcast Management Group developed a workflow for recoding and playing-back re-cap videos at various points throughout the live stream.
