Al Jazeera Town Hall Series

Producing a Four-City Election Town Hall Series for Al Jazeera Network

5Town Halls Produced

4U.S. Cities

3Weeks Planning Timeline

255+Crew Members Coordinated

200Audience Members per Event

Al Jazeera Network came to BMG with an ambitious assignment: produce five 60-minute town halls tied to the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, with events taking place across Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and Dearborn, MI.

The series needed to move quickly, travel efficiently, and maintain a consistent broadcast look across all markets. Each stop included a live audience, multilingual support, a custom scenic environment, full lighting and audio systems, and the technical infrastructure required for a live-to-tape program.

With only three weeks to prepare, BMG took ownership of the full production operation, managing the technical planning, scenic fabrication, lighting design, crew coordination, trucking logistics, translation support, and onsite execution for the entire tour.

The Challenge: Moving a Network-Quality Town Hall Series Across the Country

Al Jazeera needed the same polished town hall experience in every city, even though each venue came with different layouts, timelines, staffing needs, and technical conditions.

BMG had to create a touring model that could be packed, transported, rebuilt, staffed, and delivered repeatedly without losing consistency from one event to the next.

Three-Week Planning Window

The full tour had to be planned in only three weeks. That included scenic design, lighting, video systems, audio, staffing, translation, trucking, security, registration, and venue coordination.

Four Different Venues

The series moved through Optimist Studios, Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, Tinley Park Convention Center, and Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. Each space required a different approach to staging, audience flow, production layout, and technical setup.

Consistent On-Air Look

The set, lighting, camera coverage, and overall presentation had to feel unified across the entire series, even though the production was moving from city to city.

Live Audience and Translation Needs

Each event hosted approximately 200 audience members and required translation booths, audience headsets, PA systems, security, and registration support in addition to the broadcast production.

The Solution: A Touring Production Operation Built for Speed and Consistency

BMG served as the single production management partner for the series, bringing together the people, equipment, logistics, and technical systems needed to deliver each town hall at a network standard.

Production Management and Logistics

BMG oversaw the full production plan across all four cities, including schedules, crew coordination, venue logistics, local labor, trucking, security, guest registration, and onsite execution.

Two semi-trucks moved scenic, lighting, audio, and video equipment between markets, allowing the team to maintain a consistent production package throughout the tour.

Scenic and Lighting

BMG designed and fabricated a custom set that could travel with the series and be rebuilt in each venue.

The lighting design was developed to support both the live audience experience and the on-camera look, giving each town hall a consistent visual identity while adapting to the realities of each space.

Live-to-Tape Production

BMG provided the video production technology and crew for all five 60-minute programs.

The camera package included five Grass Valley LDX86 WorldCam cameras, with a jib, Steadicam, and three studio cameras. BMG also supplied teleprompting, video playback, communications, audio infrastructure, and complete PA systems for the main stage.

BMG’s RMU-3 Mobile Unit supported onsite production throughout the tour.

Audience Support and Translation

Because the town halls were built around in-room participation, BMG also managed the audience-facing technical needs.

The team established translation booths and provided 200 audience translation headsets, helping support multilingual participation at each event. BMG also handled onsite private security and guest registration to keep the event experience organized from arrival through wrap.

Impact: A Consistent Town Hall Series Delivered Under Pressure

Over four weeks, BMG helped Al Jazeera execute five live-to-tape town halls across four U.S. cities during a major election cycle.

The series gave Al Jazeera a consistent production environment for audience-driven conversations, while allowing the network to move efficiently between markets on a compressed timeline.

For future clients, the project shows what BMG can do when a live event has a tight timeline, multiple locations, technical complexity, and no room for fragmented execution.
