Gaming Community Network: Drew League All-Star Game

Producing the Drew League All-Star Game Across Live Sports and Esports

9Cameras

3Live Segments

3Production Locations

Gaming Community Network brought in BMG to provide multi-camera production for the inaugural Drew League All-Star Game at Los Angeles Southwest College.

The event combined several formats in one production: live coverage of an NBA 2K esports tournament, the Drew League 3-point contest, the dunk contest, and live-to-tape coverage of the All-Star Game for post-production and promotional use.

BMG built the on-site video and audio infrastructure in Los Angeles, then connected the production to BMG’s REMI broadcast hub in Las Vegas and remote operators in Chicago for switching, audio, replay, graphics, and streaming.

BMG’s REMI workflow was a perfect solution for the Drew League event we worked on together. Their technical production expertise coupled with the quality of the livestream no doubt contributed to the overall project success.

The Challenge: Covering More Than a Basketball Game

The Drew League All-Star Game needed coverage that could move between live basketball, skills competitions, esports, crowd energy, and promotional content capture.

Multiple Formats in One Event

The production had to support the NBA 2K tournament, 3-point contest, dunk contest, and All-Star Game coverage from the same venue.

Each format had different coverage needs, from gameplay feeds and player shots to court action, contest angles, and live-to-tape material for future use.

Court Coverage With Specialty Angles

GCN needed the production to capture the energy of the Drew League environment, not just a standard game feed.

That required a camera plan with hard cameras, handhelds, POVs, and dunk cams placed behind each backboard.

A Team Spread Across Three Cities

The production connected crews and infrastructure in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Chicago.

The setup had to keep on-site acquisition, hub-based production, remote switching, replay, audio, and graphics working as one live workflow.

The Solution: A REMI Production Built for Sports and Esports

BMG designed the production around the different ways the event needed to be covered.

On-Site Video and Audio Buildout

At Los Angeles Southwest College, BMG installed the video and audio infrastructure needed for the event.

The setup included nine cameras, wireless microphones, wireless communications, video shading, and monitoring systems.

The camera package included:

  • Three hard cameras in studio configuration
  • Two handheld cameras
  • Four POV cameras
  • Two dunk cams positioned behind the backboards

NBA 2K Gameplay Integration

For the esports portion, BMG transmitted the NBA 2K feed from the on-site PS5 console to the REMI hub.

The production also used a static POV camera and two handheld cameras to show the players competing. The technical director placed the gameplay feed in a two-box layout with the camera feeds, giving viewers both the game action and a live look at the competitors.

REMI Hub Production in Las Vegas

BMG sent the audio and video feeds from Los Angeles to its REMI broadcast hub in Las Vegas.

From Las Vegas, BMG handled audio mixing, replay, and engineering support, with the EIC, A1, and replay operator stationed at the hub.

Remote Switching and Graphics From Chicago

Directing, technical directing, and graphics insertion were handled remotely from Chicago.

Using remote access technology, BMG’s Chicago-based team operated the switcher and XPression graphics system, allowing specialized production roles to support the show without traveling to Los Angeles.

Impact

BMG helped GCN produce a multi-format live event that brought together basketball, esports, contests, and promotional content capture through one coordinated workflow.

The production connected Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Chicago while maintaining a clean live stream and flexible coverage model. GCN was able to cover the live segments, capture the All-Star Game for later use, and deliver a professional viewing experience without placing every production role on site.

The result was a seamless REMI production built for the specific mix of sports and esports programming that defined the inaugural Drew League All-Star Game.
